Award for 're-cycled' forest
A
woodland which was recently felled to provide timber for the forestry industry
has won an award for the way in which it has been carefully re-planted with
trees for a future generation.
The new
trees planted at Wentwood Forest, near Chepstow, by Forestry Commission Wales
in 2009 have established very quickly meaning chemical weed control measures
have been kept to a minimum.
The Commission’s
Wales Silvicultural Operations (WSO) team planted over 10,000 Douglas fir which
were supplemented by naturally regenerating Noble fir and broadleaves such as
silver birch, rowan, oak and ash.
Steve
Mather, WSO Area Operations Manager, said, “Re-stocking represents an important
aspect of sustainable forest management which includes an ongoing cycle of
growing trees and harvesting them for the many wood products they provide.
“The
standard of ground prep used, combined with site-suitable stock, made for good
quality trees that have put on excellent growth with minimum interference.
“I’m
delighted that the work of the team based in Llandovery has been recognised.”
Steve said he
hoped the recently cleared four hectare site would provide a range of
environmental benefits, both now and in the future.
The WSO
team’s efforts were recognised at the Royal Welsh Show, where it won the gold
medal for the best wood of new or restocked planting containing over 60%
conifers under 10 years old.
