It’s a political debate that has been both electrifying and utterly tedious. Should the UK leave the EU with a deal, without a deal, or not leave at all?

Now, a student at the prestigious Chippendale International School of Furniture in East Lothian has turned the debate into a talking point piece of furniture.

Stephen Barr, originally from. Northern Ireland but now living in Edinburgh, has crafted a two-door “Strong and Stable Brexit Cabinet” in walnut and Japanese ash.

It depicts the Union Jack on one door, and the EU’s stars on the other.

There is also a deliberate gap between the outer walnut structure of the cabinet and its ash inner, representing the gaps between opinion on the vexed Brexit question.

Stephen, originally from Northern Ireland but now living in Edinburgh, intends to set up in business as a fine furniture designer in West Lothian after graduation next month.

Each year, the Chippendale school takes in some 26 students from around the world on its professional course.
This year, students came from the UK, Ireland, Iceland, USA, Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany and Poland.
Stephen’s “Strong and Stable Brexit Cabinet” will be shown, alongside work from all the graduating students, at a public Exhibition and Sale of Work at Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh on Monday 10th June (12 noon – 8pm) and Tuesday 11th June (10am – 8pm).
