Homelessness charity makes furniture for Wayne Hemingway

Projects Manager Phil Urmston leading the project in The Workshops at the homelessness charity

Homelessness charity Emmaus Bolton is making something very special for a Christmas market with a difference, put together by the design company of reuse champion, Wayne Hemingway.

WasteLess Wonderland will highlight how to make best use of what we already have, through a series of workshops running alongside entertainment and food at Westgate Oxford, until 22 December.

Free opportunities for visitors include making stars, wreaths, decorations and upcycling party clothing with a booking on the shopping centre website.

Enzo Mari designed 2 x 2m table

Event organisers, Hemingway Designs, invited the Emmaus community to make furniture for WasteLess Wonderland, after spotting woodwork made by the charity at the annual Emmaus UK Assembly.

Emmaus Bolton is a homelessness charity providing a home and work for up to 22 people in social enterprises, ranging from furniture-making to charity shops and a cafe, all based off Fletcher Street in the town.

Wayne Hemingway said: “Upcycling, re-use, a wonderful charity, Emmaus giving people a leg up, what more could Hemingway Design want from a project?”

Members of Emmaus Bolton’s The Workshops team are making 16 stools inspired by one of Romain Voulet's designs along with an Enzo Mari designed 2 x 2m table.

Emmaus Bolton Projects Manager, Phil Urmston, said: “We’re estimating that it'll take two days to machine the wood to the size required so we can start putting the design together. It’s a great project to be able to work together on, and we’re looking forward to getting this machined down, finished and ready to assemble.”

All wood used the project comes from Forestry Stewardship Council certified sustainable sources as warped and twisted pine, which can no longer be used by the construction trade.

It's being put together with oak, beech and mahogany plugs from other workshop projects, so nothing goes to waste.

Emmaus Bolton’s charity shops and services are open from Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm on Fletcher Street, BL3 6NF or visit www.emmaus.org.uk/bolton.
