There can’t be many more things in the woody world more satisfying than making a piece of furniture with timber that you know has been properly treated. Furniture maker Mark Griffiths (page 42) shares the secrets of air-drying and makes a very elegant alter table in locally felled oak for his village church. I wonder if there are many makers out there who have gone through the whole cycle of production; from planting a tree, to felling, drying and producing a piece of furniture? Do get in touch. For this month’s cover feature (page 32) assistant editor Andrea Hargreaves and I spent a fascinating day at White Waltham Restoration in Maidenhead where we met Tigger the Patterdale Terrier and his pals. With the summer coming a visit from Carters Traditional Steam Fair is Bank Holiday treat. Anyone who has been to the fair will know just how brilliant the quality of the workmanship that goes into keeping these fantastic period vehicles and wooden fairground attractions in tip top condition. Over the summer I will be setting up my own small workshop which I hope will feature a mini version of Brian Barber’s clever workbench design (page 38). Elsewhere we have the usual eclectic mix of projects including a clever space saving hinged cookbook stand (page 66) that could be adapted to a hundred and one uses.
