It’s always a breath of fresh air to see a maestro furniture maker at work as I think you will agree when you see Chris Tribe’s truly superb consol table. We can all learn from his rigorous techniques that help cut out the potential for error and his attention to the tiniest details – drool over that stringing. May’s Clerkenwell Design show in London also featured some promising young Brit designer makers including Splinter Works whose Stiletto Desk takes pride of place as our Centerfold this month. From the high end we go to the more homespun but no less skillful work of matchstick carver Ken Connolly who makes everything from images of a pal’s dog to the Empire State Building. Elsewhere technical supremo Andy King provides a fascinating insight into the manufacturing practices at Makita’s Telford factory and sings the praises of Axminster’s TSCE12R table saw – which he reckons is one of the best he has ever used. Contributor Michael Forster offers a slightly cautionary tale of his experiences of buying an industry grade bandsaw – watch out for the Heffalump trap. In our Anatomy of a Classic feature Phil Whitfeld looks at the work of the Barnsley school. While Les Thorne (page 78) offers some novel ways of recycling old copies of the Angling Times.
