It must be the state of the double dip, recession-wracked world that gives some of this month’s features a distinctly make do and mend feel, but some splendid folk are restoring a 1950s’ Royal National Lifeboat Institution vessel and every woodworker possesses that old and slightly careworn tool or piece of kit that is never used but carries some emotional weight, meaning you can’t bring yourself to part with it. Technical supremo Andy King’s cherished Taylor Brothers saw gets a new lease of life via a new handle made with some great Liogier files and rasps.

Another man who makes virtue of thrift is our cover interviewee, the furniture designer and maker Michael Marriott. Dave Roberts and I spent a fascinating couple of hours with Michael and as you will see he is a man with a lot to say about creativity, craft and simply not being wasteful.

Also with an eye to economy, Leon Osman gets all arty with his Beatles-inspired painted furniture. Elsewhere old friends Michael Forster makes a dainty little key chest and David Oldfield moves a lot further up the size scale making a blanket chest.
