The cover of this month’s Good Woodworking features James Binning, the driving force behind Deep in Wood, Oxfordshire’s newest timber merchant. James is a fervent believer in the ‘local’ ethic yet his stock shows that local doesn’t preclude exotic. While James is new and growing his business fast you’ll see from our article that his goals are all long term. A fascinating read, we hope you’ll find.

Meanwhile the Good Woodworking team have been busy in the West Country. A visit to the Betty Norbury and then the Festival of the Tree proved to be experiences of the two extremes of woodworking, from high-end to folksy. That said a visit to the Classic Hand Tools marquee at Westonbirt was nothing less than inspirational, as Mike Riley tells.

From the chitchat on our forum here you’ll probably know by now that GWW.com member Mike Garnham is featured in Views From The Bench. Which seeing as the magazine isn’t on sale yet shows more of the forum members are GW subscribers (who get the magazine ahead on ‘on sale’ – ahead of even the GW office as it goes) than are maybe prepared to let on!

Martin Aplin has created an Egyptian style cabinet for this month’s Significant Styles. Quite simple and regular on first sight, it in fact features a lot of tricky angles and clever techniques. A very nice piece.

And finally in Kit & Tools Phil Davy gives the subject of marking gauges a thorough top to bottom.
