New Forest Trust Woodturning Winners
The judges were impressed by the high standard of work among the pieces entered into the New Forest Trust Woodturning Competition. All pieces were on display at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show from 30th July to 1st August and judged by professional woodturner, Les Thorne, and Colwin Way and Trevor Yates of Axminster Tool Centre, the company sponsoring the competition.
Prizes in the form of Axminster gift cards were awarded to:
1st prize - John Fells for ‘Russian Cans’
2nd prize - Paul Reeves for ‘Bubbles II’
3rd prize - Rod Page for ‘Ebonised & Pyrographed Slatted Vase in Ash’
People’s Choice - Maurice Medhurst for ‘Forested’
The winning piece by John Fells consisted of 10 wooden cans with lids, one slotting inside the other, similar to a Russian doll. Each can was turned from a different type of wood found within 10 miles of John’s home. The judges were most impressed with the technical skill demonstrated by John in turning the 10 pieces so they fitted snugly into each other.
Judge, Colwin Way, commented: “From a judge’s point of view the competition was a difficult one to decide on. The standard was very high and at the same time there was a diverse mixture of techniques, combining traditional and contemporary turning along with some very imaginative designs. The winner was chosen on technicality and difficulty; the second and third places were very different, and our decision was based more on design along with the overall standard of turning. All in all the competition was a good showcase of turning and brought a new dimension to an exhibition of fine woodwork”.
