With summer finally here, GW celebrates with some great projects for you to enjoy, including a classic garden planter from Phil Davy; an ingenious workbench for next to nothing courtesy of Paul Chesterman; Noah Weinstein is back with another ‘rainbow wood’ project - this time a clever kitchen knife strip; and Les Thorne turns up a storm when he makes a lovely decorative desk clock. Our cover star this month is Matthew White’s ‘Hot Rod’ plane, which he lovingly restored and topped off with a souped up handle, so it’s really raring to go! Hopefully this will inspire you to dust off your old hand tools and give them a new lease of life!

As well as finding the time to make a planter and paint a garden gate, intrepid reporter Phil Davy also attended the opening of Westonbirt Arboretum’s fantastic new Stil Treetop Walkway – a 13m high wooden and metal structure that provides an extraordinary view of Silk Wood. Officially opened by Countryfile presenter Ellie Harrison, the Walkway is designed to look like a sinuous ribbon; the slats play with the light and are illuminated when the sun catches them.

Michael Huntley’s ‘Small Structures’ series is sadly soon to be coming to an end, and in this issue he brings us the penultimate article, which sees him building a typical garden workshop from scratch. If you’re ever wondered what goes into building your own workshop then take a look at Michael’s invaluable guide, which highlights the trials and tribulations as well as providing some handy pointers so you don’t have to make the same mistakes he did! 

In ‘People & Places’, we speak to Roy Gollop of Lyme Bay Carvings, a man with a fascinating seafaring and boatbuilding past who has gone on to discover woodcarving. As well as discussing how to make a clinker-built dinghy and lobster pot making, he shows us his wonderful driftwood carvings, which cleverly depict a variety of sealife and birds. Roy absolutely loves nature and is inspired by its movement, and when he’s not carving, he still teaches at the Lyme Regis Boatbuilding School. 

We also have a great competition from Trend, who are celebrating the launch of their new Homewoodworker videos staring Christopher Hall, 'The Gentleman Joiner’ - and what better way to do this than to give away a £1,000 One4all voucher!
