The New Issue of Good Woodworking Magazine - GW319

Enter our competition to be in with a chance of winning SENCO kit worth over £700

Summer is just a moment away and we hope you enjoy all the things we’ve got in store for you in our June issue. We have two fantastic competitions for you to enter, the first of which gives one lucky reader the opportunity to win a SENCO Systainer Compressor bundle with 3-in-1 tool set and accessories, which is worth over £700. Andy King tests all the kit in this issue and is thoroughly impressed by it. And if you don’t win the big prize, then worry not as we also have 10 SENCO polo shirts to give away to the runners up. And as if that wasn’t enough, we also have 20 IRWIN WeldTec CSB 165mm/24T cordless circular saw blades to give away, which are extremely durable and deliver 50% longer life. Details of both competitions can be found by clicking here: www.getwoodworking.com/competitions.

As well as being generous with giveaways, we also have some great projects for you to have a go at making, including Michael McCrory’s wonderful toy lawnmower project, which combines a variety of skills, just in time for summer. Or, if you fancy having a go at making something for your patio, then Chris Jones’ bespoke wooden staggered planter will definitely appeal, especially as it can be made for around £10. Peter Benson also shares the story of his latest commission, a legilium for his local church. This clever design can be folded when not in use and certainly went down well with the congregation! Phil Davy’s Shaker-style backdoor bench will appeal to those who are looking for a handy place to stow their walking gear, and it can be placed indoors or out, and finally, Les Thorne shows you how to turn your very own Regency era-inspired string tidy.

Peter Bishop returns with a brand-new series since finishing his beginners’ guide to power tools. Aimed at creating a better understanding of timber, its uses and other associated areas of interest, he shows that no matter where you place yourself within the broad category of woodworking, it should be enjoyed in all its guises, and in the first of a new three-part series entitled ‘Woodworking Adventures’, David Moody shows that even with limited tools, budget and space, you can still make some useful woodworking projects.

Star of this month’s front cover, Edward Hopkins’ champagne tower is a joy to behold, and he takes us through the steps of making it from initial design ideas to final execution, while encompassing some potential pitfalls along the way, before he returns for our ‘End-Grain’ feature, which sees him showing you how to be a brilliant designer for £1.28. This month’s ‘Centrefold’ is Philip Dobbins’ award-winning unique console table that despite combining a classic design with traditional elements, embraces modern technology at every turn. We also bring you a heart-warming feature that finds out more about Kids Club Kampala (KCK)’s carpentry project, as Jonathan Fraser shows how the charity is exploring ways of teaching woodworking to impoverished members of a slum community in Uganda, helping them to ‘craft’ their way out of poverty by providing them with the tools and skills they need.

In this month’s welcome page, I share the sad news that Andy King will no longer be our chief kit & tools tester, as he has just landed himself a fantastic new job working for Trend. Worry not, however, as you will still see him in the magazine, as well as out and about at shows. He’s not off the hook just yet, though, and on his workbench this month was the SENCO compressor kit, which we will be giving away to one lucky reader, as well as Howard’s Sanding Sealer & Clear Lacquer, the iGaging EZ Cal digital calliper and the Triton TGEOS geared eccentric orbital sander. Despite some unexpected vibration issues, he found the TGEOS to be a good performer and it certainly made quick working of sanding back a bench-top.

As well as all the excellent content described above, we also have your usual favourites, including news and courses, letters and makers, a sneak peek at the next issue and much more! Be sure to pick up your copy today, or why not subscribe if you haven’t already!

Enjoy!
