Annemarie Adams takes a simple design for a wooden whistle and gives it wings

Our July issue is all about summer woodworking and we’ve got some great projects, techniques and features to amuse you over the coming month, as well as our usual array of tests and all the latest woodworking news. We also have an exclusive feature on Richard Williams’ ‘Display Cabinet for a Chinese Terracotta Horse’, which was recently awarded the prestigious Claxton Stevens Prize.

Looking firstly at the projects we have in store, however, we kick off with David Moody’s clever custom magazine binder, which is ideal for storing past copies of your favourite magazine. It looks great on the shelf and helps to keep all of your issues in tip-top condition. And if you’ve been following Shaun Newman’s latest project - the Appalachian dulcimer build - in the final part he puts the finishing touches to it and also shows how you can make your very own custom case. We love Annemarie Adams’ projects, and she’s back this month with a lovely carving article, which sees her modifying a whistle design and giving it wings - literally! Phil Davy has a great project for you to make for the garden, which will definitely appeal if you’re a fan of growing climbers. His pyramid trellis is relatively easy to make and looks wonderful on the lawn or flower bed. Finally, Les Thorne offers a great suggestion for all those of you with small lathes who think you’re only able to turn small projects. His large vase on a small lathe looks at making the project in two parts and joining them together - perfect!

Our technical section is particularly full this month and we really have got all bases covered, beginning with the next instalment of Dave Roberts’ ‘What the Dickens’ series, before we bring you the penultimate part of John Bullar’s beginners’ guide to furniture making, where he looks at the range of fixtures and fittings available to the furniture maker. We also have a guest appearance from Pete Sartain - Mirka UK’s national sales manager - who discusses the importance of using dust extraction and suggests some top tips for protecting yourself and reducing the risk of HAVS. And in his new series, Peter Bishop moves on to looking at the growth and structure of trees, before David Moody, in ‘Woodworking Adventures’, urges you to not allow yourself to be limited by what you have – instead, be open to new possibilities. We also have a great contribution from John McMahon of the John McMahon School of Fine Woodwork, who shares his advice on turning professional and suggests a number of routes you could take, as well as discussing the pros and cons of each.

In ‘People & Places’ we find out more about box-making master and this month’s cover star Steve Altman, who, with over 40 years’ experience in the woodworking industry, is as passionate about the craft today as he was when he started out. We also have Edward Hopkins’ next ‘End-Grain’, which sees him asking if we can walk into the workshop and begin a project without even knowing what it is?

Andy King also returns to test some of the latest woodworking kit, including two of the brand-new Bosch Bluetooth-enabled tools: the Bosch Professional GSB 18 V-60 combi drill and the Bosch Professional GCL 2-50 C combi laser. He also looks at the nifty Shogun 2-in-1 folding knife, which is ideal for gardening and small woodworking tasks, and the Snappy Applicator and Nanoblock Snappy Applicator, which allow you to achieve a uniform, bubble-free, non-streaky finish on your projects. Brilliant!
