After much anticipation, we finally reveal the seven category winners followed by the overall winner of Shed of the Year 2016. We have six pages filled with wonderful sheds, each amazing in their own right. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner and he is also this month’s cover star - Kevin Herbert from Berkshire and his eco-friendly hideaway ‘West Wing’, which beat off stiff competition to be crowned the ultimate winner. For those of you who saw the accompanying TV show, you will know just what a nail-biting final it was and we loved every minute of it. In fact, we can’t wait to see what the sheddies come up with for next year’s competition!

In terms of technical articles, John Bullar returns with the next in his beginners’ series, which sees him exploring the range of marking tools available to the furniture maker as well as the techniques that can be used in order for you to get the most from them. And in the next part of his beginners’ guide to using power tools, Peter Bishop moves on to looking at a variety of static, fixed-bed saws and discussing tips and techniques for their usage. Lastly, we have a great article from Barrie Scott, who speaks frankly about the trials and tribulations of being a joiner on the job and shares some of his varied commissions with us, as well as the ups and downs he experienced while making them!

Fresh back from the recent Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design, Robert Scott shares his stunning ‘Aeolian’ stack laminated and hand-carved table, which forms this month’s ‘Centrefold’, and the Editor finds out how more the work of studio furniture maker Scott E. Armstrong, who really does loves wood! With a career spanning some 35 years, this maker strives for excellence in the design and execution of every piece he makes.
