robinson house studio moves to new state-of-the-art premises & opens its doors from 10–11 September 2022

For many years, robinson house studio Founder, Marc Fish, had been searching for the right premises. Having established the school and his creative workshop from a tiny unit in Newhaven, East Sussex, the need for more space was fast becoming an absolute necessity.

Marc Fish’s own design studio was achieving international acclaim and, as a result, his work proving very sought after by collectors. The school was also becoming very popular with students wanting to be trained by Marc himself as well as Senior Tutor, Theo Cook, who has over 25 years' experience in the fine furniture industry. So when Eastside Business Park in Newhaven was built, Marc jumped at the chance to move into one of the new units.

As part of Artwave 2022, the upcoming open days – from 10–11 September – will give visitors the chance to see the exceptional space available to new students as well as showcasing the high standard of craftsmanship coming out of the school and workshop.

Visitors will be able to tour the fantastic new space as well as seeing behind the scenes of a successful woodworking workshop. Recent work from students on the 50-week Furniture Designer and Makers Course will also be on display and available to purchase.

• Marc Fish’s work will be available to view over the weekend, giving visitors the chance to see, close-up, some exceptionally beautiful pieces from his 'Ethereal' collection, which have recently been shown at Masterpiece London Art Fair 2022.

Scheduled talks are as follows:

11am – Saturday 10 September: Drawing upon 25 years' furniture making experience, Senior Tutor Theo Cook talks about his recent ‘making of a low angle smoothing plane’ project. Given the fact there's only a few hand plane makers in the world, this is a great opportunity to discover how Theo has engineered this amazing and unique stainless steel example.

2pm – Saturday 10 September: Marc Fish discusses his contemporary work and inspiration.

3pm – Saturday 10 September: Derek Jones of Lowfat Roubo introduces the courses he'll be offering at robinson house studio.

The school also runs a successful bench rental scheme for cabinet/furniture makers requiring extra space. Many recent graduates also take up the opportunity to start their own fine furniture making business from robinson house studio with support from Marc and Theo, by renting a bench for their first year.

With recent graduates walking into fantastic careers within the fine furniture industry, there's never been a better time to train as a furniture maker at robinson house studio.

It's hoped the open days will provide visitors with an opportunity to see, first hand, the exceptional standard of craftsmanship coming out of the school. You can find more information here, as well as taking a virtual tour.
