Open Competition 2014: The Fiona Woolf Competition
To celebrate the election of Honorary Liveryman Turner, Fiona Woolf, as Lord Mayor of London the Open Competition in October 2014 will be held in her honour
This is an Open Competition with a very broad theme ‘The Square Mile’s energy to transform lives’:
The theme for the competition reflects Fiona’s belief that the City of London has the energy and talent for innovation to meet the momentous challenges that face society – it has
‘’ The Energy to Transform Lives’’ Criteria for inclusion of work in the competition:
- The piece should be of a size suitable for display on a shelf or tabletop.
- The piece must be primarily created on the lathe, but you are free to incorporate materials other than wood and/or use other techniques.
- Interpretation of the theme is left to the turner. The piece will be judged for the quality of work and how it relates to the theme. It must be new, original, and specifically created for the competition.
- The turner should have fun making it. There will be a special prize for the best entry by a school child.
Some Background Notes:
The City of London is a separate jurisdiction within London. The reference to ‘square mile’ is a reference to the approximate area of the walled Roman City. It was not square.
In 12th century the City of London was granted the right, privilege and responsibility of governing itself separately. Elected annually, the Lord Mayor is head of the City of London and ambassador for all UK based financial and professional services. The city is world renown for Insurance, shipping and the law. The city is also famous for churches, archeology, music, art and livery companies.
The Corporation of London manages the affairs of the City. It has its own Police Force, owns and operates five bridges and three forests. Other Thoughts: Dick Whittington, Christopher Wren, St Pauls, the gherkin
The Lord Mayor’s Appeal this year reflects Fiona’s chosen charities: Beating Bowel Cancer; Princess Alice Hospice, Raleigh International and Working Chance.
Company Classes
- The Master's competition: One class; open to plain and ornamental turners; top prize £1250: to make a matching pair of goblets
- Felix Levy Open: Contemporary work of your choice; top prize £1250
- WCT Open2014: The Fiona Woolf Competition: Theme 'Energy for Life in the Square
Mile' (See briefing sheet for ideas). Top prize £1250. Separate award for school children.
- Bert Marsh Senior and Novice (Closed WCT members only)
Classes under the auspices of the Society of Ornamental Turners There will be three competitions open only to members of the Society of Ornamental Turners.
- The Lady Gertrude Crawford Gold Medal and £200 for conventional ornamental turning.
- The Fred Howe Gold Medal and £200 for a combination of ornamental and rose turning.
- The H. E. Twentyman Silver Medal and £100 for mainly plain form with some ornamentation.
The Medals will be awarded for the best entry by a competitor who has not previously won it.
Classes under the auspices of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain Three Plain Turning Competitions open only to members of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. There are no restrictions as to subject or techniques employed.
- The Senior Class will have Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and cash prizes of £200, £150 and £100 plus up to 3 runnerup cash prizes of £50.
- The Junior Class will have Silver and Bronze medals and cash prizes of £125 and £75 and £50.
- The Ray Key Competition for juniors who have attended an AWGB Youth Training Day
Class Under the auspices of the Association of Pole Lathe Turners
There will be one Pole Lathe Turning Competition open only to members of the Association of Pole-Lathe Turners to produce a three legged stool. There will be cash prizes of £200, £100 and £50.
