Sussex House, shortlisted in the Private category of this year’s Wood Awards

We can’t get enough of the Wood Awards this month but after seeing the stunning Sussex House, designed by Wilkinson King Architects and made using spruce, western red cedar and engineered oak, we had to use this as this month’s ‘Centrefold’.

Turn this decorative pedestal box with Les Thorne

As well as a wide array of projects (including a writing bureau and a marking knife) we also have a great turning project for you - Les Thorne’s decorative pedestal box, which was inspired by a thrift shop find.

In terms of techniques, this month’s issue features a great piece from Dave Roberts, who explores Savonarola Down Under and in his Foundation course, Michael Huntley cuts a knuckle joint before Phil Davy makes an alcove cupboard in his ‘Around the House’ series. Plus, this is your last chance to enter our competition to win a tool chest, tools and a course with David Savage, worth over £3,000.

luthiery, violin making

One of the tools used in luthiery, which is invaluable for repair work that doesn't involve dismantling, as Barrie Scott discovers

Barrie Scott also nips over to France to discover more about the fiddle makers of Rouen, specifically luthier Bernard Baptiste, who shares his tricks of the trade. And if you’re in the market for a new plane, why not check out the new Veritas custom plane kit, which this month was worthy of Andy King’s full five-star commendation.

Be sure to pick up issue 297 of Good Woodworking, which hits the shelves on 18 September, 2015
