The Woodworker

Our first magazine of the New Year is actually on sale just before Christmas. Although it’s probably too late for you to make any of the projects featured in this issue, you still have time to buy a present or two. How about a set of Paul Sellers’ Working Wood: The Artisan Course – a lavish book plus seven DVDs – for the woodworker closest to your heart? You can order it now by visiting www.myhobbystore.co.uk. Our equipment test section starting on page 70 might also give you some ideas. Of course, you may prefer to put the magazine aside until the Christmas dinner has gone down and you can settle back to read it at your leisure. Here’s what we have in store for you.

• A gentle curve – Duncan Rose presents the first of two articles featuring a twin-pedestal desk with sculpted legs and a softly rounded desktop. He’ll complete the build in our February issue.
• A suitable case for treatment – Peter Bishop shows off his skills as a furniture restorer by rescuing a neglected Victorian library bookcase and giving it a new lease of life.
• Ring of light – Mark Milner produces his first article for The Woodworker by describing how he made a round hardwood window frame from scratch to fill a gaping hole in his bathroom wall.
• A crafty solution – Ben Plewes takes some padauk and some ash and uses it to create an unusual storage box for a range of handicraft materials.

In our Workshop section, Ron Fox completes his encyclopaedic series of articles on routing, taking an in-depth look at some of the things you can do with a router table. Paul Sellers writes about the joys and challenges of introducing woodwork to children, while Ben Plewes offers a quick eight-step guide to help you keep your lungs as free from fine dust as possible. Keith Smith presents another five woodworking gadgets he thinks you must have, and delivers the latest instalment of his kitchen fitting story in his regular Shop Notes column.

For the turners among you, Bob Chapman transforms a piece of cocobolo into a perfect apple-shaped box. Colin Simpson combines elements of spindle and faceplate turning techniques to make a set of napkin rings and a stand to keep them on. Lastly, Chris Child creates a stunning hand mirror with a satinwood handle and frame, surrounded by a violet rosewood bead.

Finally, our regular test section has reviews this month of the following tools and equipment:
• CamVac GV 336 and GV286w dry vacuum extractor
• Festool Domino XL DF 700 jointer
• Einhell BT-SS 405E scrollsaw
• Makita BKP180RFE cordless planer
• Dremel 300 series Black Edition multi-tool kit
