The Woodworker

• Reading room – Duncan Rose builds a magnificent set of bookcases to house a collection of over 2000 books in a purpose-built library. They’re fitted from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
• A veneer of respectability – Gordon Warr demonstrates how the art of veneering can turn a nondescript hardwood box into a thing of beauty… and a perfect seasonal gift.
• Fine tuning – Paul Bodiam complete his tenor ukulele by adding the frets to the fingerboard, finishing the assembly and setting the instrument up ready to play. Could you make one in time for Christmas?
• Feed the birds – New contributor Peter Benson presents a bird table with some novel design features, guaranteed to give your feathered friends a festive treat.
• Old favourites – Peter Bishop entertains with a selection of traditional games to make and play, including noughts-and-crosses, a cribbage board and a set of dice.

In our Workshop section Andy King, the technical editor of Good Woodworking, continues his new series that takes an in-depth look at workshop machinery. This month he tackles the planer thicknesser. Meanwhile, in Shop notes Keith Smith makes clever use of wasted space in a fitted kitchen, and updates his long-running test on wood glues with news of the latest successes and failures.

Our turning section offers a festive treat and a technical challenge. Ian Wilkie turns wooden Christmas tree decorations for his friends and family every year, and presents an attractive design for you to copy and hang on your tree. And if you fancy something completely different, Colin Simpson takes a green yew blank and uses it to create an unusual bowl with a square surround and a charred edge.

Next, our regular test section has reviews this month of the following tools and equipment:
• Einhell BT-CS 1200/1 circular saw
• Japanese adjustable boring bits
• Makita BBO180 cordless random orbit sander
• Axminster AWSL lathe
• GemRed digital callipers
• Gedore Magic shear cutting set

And finally…
…we’re pleased to announce the inclusion of the Annual Index for 2012. This lists all the projects, features and tests we’ve published during the year… and appears in the December issue (where it belongs) for the very first time!
