Following up on his recent series on marquetry, Peter Dunsmore incorporates a picture into the top of a box that you can make. The reasonably simple box has a lift out tray and the simple corner joints are easy to make yet Peter’s eye for detail gives it a classy look using contrasting timbers. Just the project for these long dark evenings combining workshop time with the marquetry that can be done anywhere – even indoors!

Elsewhere in the projects section you will find something for everybody and I even show you how to build a very simple tote intended for carrying the glues and other liquids that may not take kindly to being left out in an unheated workshop in the depths of winter.

In the workshop section you will find Ron Fox talking about panelling cutters while your editorial team look at setting up the router for cutting and some basic jigs. For the quieter side of woodworking Ben Plewes continues his finishing series and this time he is looking at grain filling – a traditional technique that has been used for generations to give the wood a smoother surface on to which the final finish can be applied.

In the turning section you can see how I got on while continuing my journey from square to round woodworking as I make a footed shallow bowl from a piece of black cherry. Ian Wilkie has obviously been checking out our regular web feature; High Street Bargain Hunter as he is turning out picture frames on a budget – and very nice they look too!

For the tool junkie we have our usual selection of tests including a belt sander with a lift up bonnet, very strange. Alan Holtham is going to town on three unsuspecting routers with a screwdriver!
