The Woodworker

This time we have lots to keep you busy. Anyone for backgammon? Duncan Rose Kicks it all off with a folding backgammon table. The design is similar to that used for the card tables found on the old QEII ocean liner. The tournament sized table features a veneered surface and turned wooden chequers.

Alan Holtham solves his space and access problems when he is commissioned to build some shelves. They have to be delivered via a narrow loft ladder. You can read the story on page 18.

Meanwhile I am in the workshop building paper hinged boxes. The idea is based on some paper covered cigar boxes I was given several decades ago and are still intact. The simple design and construction means they can be made quickly and easily. They are ideal for storage or gift boxes.

Ben is in the workshop continuing his finishing series with a look at using stains and dye. And he is at it again with the mixing – kitchen utensils in evidence again. I wonder if Mrs Plewes has missed that Pyrex jug yet?

In the turning section, Ian Wilkie shows you how to prepare a bi-colour blank and turn a very nice vase on a medium sized lathe. Meanwhile Chris Child goes green and discusses the merits of turning green wood after a neighbour presented him with some interesting looking yew logs that had been destined for his wood burning stove. His thoughts might encourage you to have a go. I think I will!

All this plus plenty more for you to build plus our usual selection of workshop ideas and a good dose of tool tests including Alan Holtham’s penultimate journey down the road of tool torture as he puts a selection of corded drills through their paces and then proceeds to strip them down to reveal their innermost secrets. All is laid bare when Alan continues his series; You pays your Money starting on page 67.
