Derek Lane's truck build

Our cover star for the August issue is Derek Lane's Mercedes truck build, which he added a few modifications to in order to add a personal flourish. Made for his grandchildren, the toy truck features a beaver tail and measures 305mm long x 114mm wide x 150mm high. In terms of other projects, we also have Tony 'Bodger' Scott's secret catch, as he shows how to make a hidden lock for any box; and in 'back to school' Ray Harding shares a trinket box design from one of his school woodworking lessons.

In turning, Ian Wilkie kicks off with a range of different bud vase designs, using various different woods and plastic inserts; Bob Chapman makes use of some cut-price glass domes and decides to turn a cake stand, which could also double up as a cheese dome if you prefer; and if you fancy a change from turning timber, Sarah Thirwell's article on using laminated paper and cork to turn boxes could well give you some new and innovative ideas.
