Why not have a go at making Grace Silverman’s rocking hippo with moveable jaw?

Although it’s hard to believe that we’re already on our October issue, as with every month, we’ve done our best to put together one that appeals to all woodworkers and woodturners, regardless of skill level. We hope there’s something to tickle everyone’s fancy, so without further ado, let’s have a look at what you can expect this month. In projects and turning, in part 2 of his ‘air guitar’ build, Shaun Newman describes how the back of the guitar should be fitted and bindings and purflings put into place; next, Lance Winter shows you how to make your very own drill vice/clamp, which can accommodate a wide variety of different gluing and holding situations; Grace Silverwood returns with another clever rocking creation - Henry the Hippo; Dave Roberts’ coat rack is made from ebony and... well, you can probably guess the rest; making use of leftover oak-veneered MDF from a previous project, Phil Davy’s table lamp base makes an ideal small project; and last but not least, suffering a workshop mishap due to an errant piece of flying timber, Les Thorne is forced to turn himself a new base for one of his trusty workshop lamps.

In our technical section, join Michael Forster as he prepares to cut the mortise & tenon joints ready to build next month’s work table; then, Geoff Ryan shares some useful tips for working with various types of small-scale CNC machine as well as providing examples of the pieces he’s made over the years; before Peter Bishop looks at terms including chattering, chivs, chonkers and clap boarding, which are just a few of the interesting things he covers and describes in the latest instalment of ‘woodworker’s encyclopaedia’.

We also have a fantastic feature this month from John Greeves, who talks to Simon Payne about Blue Forest and Chewton Glen’s spectacular treehouse creation for the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Gracing this month’s front cover, we’re sure you’ll be equally amazed and have fun discovering your ‘inner’ child. Next up, Robin Gates deconstructs a wheelbarrow design from the June 1927 issue of The Woodworker; also, in his monthly column, Anselm Fraser, Principal of The Chippendale International School of Furniture, talks about ways to keep the customer happy; in ‘me and my workshop’ we head to Wales and find out more about the life and workshop of woodworker and reader, A.B. Allwood; and in ‘end-grain’, Edward Hopkins discusses the secrets of success when it comes to woodworking.

In our ‘on test’ section, we’re thrilled to finally announce our review of the brand-new DeWalt cordless router, which Phil Davy didn’t hesitate in awarding the full five stars.
