The Furniture Makers’ Company Prize

Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design prize for the best designed piece of furniture.

The Furniture Makers’ Company fourth annual £500 prize for the best designed piece of furniture has been won this year by Young & Norgate for its Animate writing table, made in English bog oak, a sub-fossilised timber which has been lying in the peat bogs of East Anglia for over 4000 years prior to its second appearance in this desk. English oak and leather from the UK’s last remaining oak bark tannery – a tannery which can trace its heritage back to Roman times.

Judges Alan Tilbury, Mark Gabbertas and Marc Fish were unanimous in their decision, the desk was chosen for its superb craftsmanship, interesting choice and use of timber, and details such as the side-hung drawers and sliding desk tidy.
