Giant Rocking Horse
Bigger Bertie’s Burnby Bound!
Yorkshire’s Giant Rocking Horse to be stabled at Burnby Hall Gardens
Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum, Pocklington are pleased to announce that “Bigger Bertie”, the world’s largest hand-carved working wooden rocking horse, will be a new and exciting feature in their award winning venue from Wednesday 23rd April 2014.
Measuring 28’ 3” long x 14’6” high x 5’10” wide, and having attracted widespread media attention at both national and international levels, he will now have a new home at the Gardens, giving their many thousands of annual visitors the opportunity to appreciate this fantastic rocking horse in beautiful surroundings.
A local couple, Sean and Angela Smith of Seaton Ross purchased Bigger Bertie with the express wish that he would be used to benefit the local community. “Our family has enjoyed visiting the gardens at Burnby Hall and our children just love rocking horses” says Angela “so we thought they would make a special combination for all to enjoy.”
“We are really pleased to have “Bigger Bertie” coming to live with us from this April”, says Peter Rogers, Press Officer at the Gardens. “Rocking Horses are loved by adults and children the world over, and to have the biggest hand-carved working one in the world on display here will be a super new attraction for our visitors. The sheer size and craftsmanship involved are amazing!”
“We designed and built Bigger Bertie to inspire young people to take vocational qualifications and consider future careers where they could actually make something”, says Jane Cook Managing Director of the Rocking Horse Shop at Fangfoss. “We couldn’t be more delighted that he is going to be in the beautiful hand-tended gardens at Burnby Hall for so many people to see him, and who knows he might inspire one of the visitors to become a carver?”
“Bigger Bertie” will arrive at Burnby Hall Gardens at 11.30am on Wednesday 23rd April, where the Gardens are hosting a special “Rocking Horse Day” with themed crafts and activities arranged to coincide with this. There’s also going to be a children’s painting competition in the run up to his arrival which will be judged on site during the afternoon.
Come along and welcome this fantastic new attraction for the Gardens and celebrate this special event!
