Toby Howes' Iris drinks cabinet is, as you can see, a rather special piece of work. But as great as it looks in a picture, we would hardly be doing it justice if we didn't include a video, which you can see below, of the rather seductive opening mechanism in action. Toby designed the piece while at college, and was told along the way - by his tutor no less - that it was impossible. Guess he showed him! The coopered body is made from 24 slats of oak, glued together like a barrel, the top from burr oak, and the black section from lacquered MDF. More of Toby's work in this month's Good Wood. Iris is copyright Toby Howes, and a patent is also in the works.

And there's plenty more of Toby's spectacular work in this month's Good Woodworking (234), on sale this Friday (05/11).
