The Woodworker inc Good Woodworking – July 2021

Despite a slow start to summer, our July issue aims to bring some sunshine to your woodworking life with a fantastic range of projects, features, technical articles and tool tests. So, dust off your workbench, open the doors to your workshop and join us as we take a look at what's inside this month's offering.

PROJECTS & TURNING

In our 'projects & turning' section, Dave Long's corner summerhouse build with cathedral roof is the perfect summer garden project; and in part 2 of his hat turning series, Andrew Hall takes you through the steps for sanding and finishing your headwear, followed by techniques used for adding texture and applying colour; next, also this month's cover star, with its fuchsia pattern and black veneering, Ian Hawthorne’s box is a real challenge; Geoff Ryan's bespoke six-drawer storage unit perfectly fits the brief he set; Phil Davy anticipates the golden evenings of late summer with his folding table made from softwood; and last but not least, Les Thorne takes three identical bowl blanks, turns three different shapes, applies a different base and finish to each, before sharing the results of his experiment.

TECHNICAL

In our 'technical' section, John Bullar takes us through the steps for setting up a workshop and choosing the best tools for the jobs in hand; in the next woodworker’s encyclopaedia instalment, Peter Bishop gets stuck into the Ps – we’ll part, peel, have pie crust and end up planing some wood; before Andy Standing looks at the houndstooth dovetail – a particularly attractive variation on one of the most instantly recognisable of all woodworking joints.

FEATURES

Moving on to features, Robin Gates sits and thinks about chairs with a copy of The Woodworker from January 1935; next, awarded Bespoke Guild Mark No.465 for his stunning ‘Sika’ console table, self-confessed ‘materials geek’ Laurent Peacock fuses custom-made surfaces and unexpected materials combinations; in the next part of his 'Great Makers' series, Simon Frost looks at the work of, arguably, the most celebrated American craftsman of the 20th century – the legendary Sam Maloof; in another fantastic feature, Paul Greer looks at the use of wood in the construction of various modes of transport from the year 1000 to present day; and in 'Take 5', we bring you another stunning selection of pieces, from exquisite cabinetmaking to precision woodturning.

ON TEST

On the test bench this month, John Lloyd takes his sharpening up a notch and looks at the Tormek Diamond Wheels, which are available in three different grades: Coarse, Fine and Extra Fine. And if power tools are more your bag, Jonathan Salisbury's review of the Makita DTD171 18V LXT brushless impact driver presents you with a great option, which is not only compact, but powerful.
