The Woodworker inc Good Woodworking - October - 2020

Autumn is nearly here, and what a great time for all things woodworking! In this fantastic issue, we bring you the usual mix of projects and turning, technical content, features, plus various tests on a selection of brand-new kit.

In our projects and turning section, in the final instalment of this unique build, Shaun Newman constructs the back of his Baroque guitar, bridge and ‘mustachios’, fits the frets, strings up and tunes, before making a custom carrying case; next, using an old dismantled satin walnut sideboard, Andrew Hall is commissioned to make two cigar box guitars and two trinket boxes using various upcycled parts; wishing to fill an empty space in his hallway, Geoff Ryan is pleased to find he has room for a mirror unit complete with a set of drawers – perfect for housing keys and other items; Phil Davy creates more room in his cottage by stripping out window seats and replacing boards; before Peter Vivian gives his house a lift by setting about replacing two leaded lights; also this month's cover star, in the first part of this article, Matthew White sets about recreating a music stand by the great Wharton Esherick - with a few added upgrades; Phil Edwards gets inside the imaginative head of the late great James Krenov to recreate his signature cabinet on stand; and last but by not means least, Les Thorne had reason not to like this tree very much – until it fell down in a gale. He gives himself a handicap by turning it wet.

In our technical section, Dremel's handy beginners’ guide to sanding will show you the tools of the trade and where to start; and in the next instalment of his 'Woodworker's encyclopaedia', Peter Bishop takes us on through ‘H’ and another letter bites the dust. We’re hewing and hogging, finding honeycombs and slipping on into the Is to discover more secrets from the woodworking world.

Next up, in features, Robin Gates finds a lesson in self-help on the cover of The Woodworker from December 1947 and takes heed of advice from the ‘reverend’ Charles Hayward; Paul Greer explores the various roles wood has played in a theatre environment through the ages; next, we take a look at some past graduates from the Furniture Design and Makers Long Course who have gone on to win many highly acclaimed awards; the Chippendale International School of Furniture celebrates its 35th anniversary; and in 'take 5', from cabinetmaking to woodcarving and woodturning, we have five more stunning pieces to capture your imagination, specially selected from Instagram.

Moving on to our 'on test' section, if you're in the market for a few new tools then be sure to check out these pages, as Jonathan Salisbury appraises Ian Hawthorne's Neat Elite Hinge & Lock, before Simon Frost puts the Henry Taylor Bevel Edge Chisels through their paces.
