The Woodworker inc Good Woodworking - September - 2020

As we work our way through the year, we bring you another excellent edition of your favourite woodworking magazine, filled with the usual mix of projects, turning and technical articles, plus features and a selection of brand-new tests.

In our projects and turning section, Tim Pettigrew shares his experiences of turning a large walnut bowl, which took place over several years; next, we join Zac Matchett-Smith as he makes a custom-built desk in maple and ash complete with hairpin legs, all in time for his girlfriend’s 30th birthday; Peter Vivian comes up with a novel design for his take on a traditional Mancala board; also, inspired by the vivid colours of the cenote lakes in Mexico, Les Thorne creates a textured and airbrushed bowl that incorporates greens and blues to simulate the effect of deep water; and finally, Noah Weinstein shows you how to make good use of scrap pieces of wood lying around the workshop with his colourful chopping board project.

In our technical section, we have a special article on sharpening turning tools from Mike Darlow; also, in the next instalment of his 'woodworker's encyclopaedia' series, Peter Bishop moves on from the hand saw, the end of the Gs and starts on the Hs, with lots of snippets of information for you to digest; and in part 3 of his start-up diary, Simon Frost focuses on setting up an online shop for small products, organising the finances of his business, and making a piece of bespoke furniture for his partner.

Moving on to features, in 'Archive', inveterate collector Robin Gates finds the answer to life’s little curiosities in the July 1911 issue of The Woodworker; next, choosing to make furniture and wooden objects that are different and unique, just like we are, Fernanda Nunez’ furniture making style focuses on traditional craftsmanship that often combines modern methods with striking visual effects, finds Martin Pim-Keirle; in 'Modern woodworking' Tom Fraser, Principal of The Chippendale International School of Furniture, is excited to welcome students back after months of lockdown; from the humble beginnings of a domestic garage, Neil Stevenson, Owner and Managing Director of NEJ Stevenson Ltd, has grown the company to remarkable heights, albeit facing some challenges when he started, as Axminster Tools & Machinery’s Lillie Filtness discovers; and in 'Take 5' we bring you another selection of wooden wonders, specially selected from Instagram.

If you're looking to add to your workshop with a varied selection of woodworking kit, then be sure to have a look at our 'on test' section, as we have some absolute gems!
