The Old Grammar School, Blowinghouse Hill, Redruth. In a county like Cornwall — famous for its broken-toothed mine workings and the heavy brows of its granite cliffs long before the modern surf culture washed ashore — a name like Blowinghouse Hill conjures a picture all of its own, doesn’t it? Stern, institutional, crumbling and paint-peeling, the Old Grammar School is what Vivian Stanshall would have called ‘Miss…

I like finger joints. I find their symmetry more attractive than through dovetails for the corners of boxes. Admittedly they don’t have the inherent strength of the locking pins and tails of a dovetail, but the castellations give a very long glue line that, with modern adhesives, is more than strong enough for boxes, chests, and carcases. Finger joints can be cut in various ways, including by hand. With a router, it isn’t too…

Learn to carve lettering, and you can make a stylish and individual house or business sign. You can personalize gifts or furniture with carved inscriptions. In fact, lettering can enhance pretty well any woodworking project that you undertake.

You can cut lettering with a router using templates (or freehand, with a bit of practice), but machine-cut lettering is seldom distinctive or particularly elegant. However, the starting point for any…

This month’s Good Woodworking embraces the festive spirit – sooner that than the sense that western civilisation is in terminal meltdown (or the western economies, at least). Who’d have thought we’d find comfort in a fat guy in red robes at our age?!

In any case, with Christmas approaching we’ve put together three handy wee projects that could just get you out of a tight spot with just days to go before the big day. There’s…

The sander weighs only 1.3 kg and its design provides a variety of grip positions. Bosch say these factors make very comfortable use of the tool whether working overhead, on shaped or curved pieces or vertical surfaces. The GEX 125-1 AE has an integral dust extraction unit in the form of the Bosch micro-filter, capable of retaining even the smallest particles. The system provides over 80 per cent dust collection and its transparent dust…

We recently kicked off a new series in Good Woodworking magazine (issue 208) called Notes from a small workshop. The series started with a look at my basement workshop and how best to get around many of the problems found in small workshops. We’ve also featured a good number of pictures and comments from GetWoodworking.com members which has transformed the articles from a one way dialogue to a much more interesting and inclusive read.…

Keith Smith is the handsome gent on the cover. Our master of the workshop (Shop Notes) is the author-maker of this issue’s lead project – a pair of French doors, made without joints. Typically Keith, the project is immaculately executed. Fascinating reading.

Alan Holtham adds more depth to the Projects section with a hall table that proves to be an excellent test of your routing skills. Mark Cass, meanwhile, has a commission to make…
