The August issue of The Woodworker incorporating Good Woodworking is now on sale and we have a varied selection of fantastic content for you to enjoy. Having received great feedback from our readers regarding our new ‘super’ magazine, we’re confident that we have discovered the winning formula when it comes to creating a title that will appeal to all woodworkers, regardless of your preferred discipline. Kicking off this brand-new issue is part 1 of Shaun Newman’s series on making an early Viennese guitar in the style of Johann Georg Staufer, before Colin Simpson shows us how to turn a lovely end-grain bowl from a piece of mulberry, which features a strikingly attractive natural-edge. Next up is Ben Hackney’s custom tool rack, which is also this month’s chosen cover image. Ben had been wanting to build a custom rack for years but could never find the time, but since making his own version tailored to his specific needs, he says he’ll never look back. Also in projects is Phil Davy’s outdoor mailbox, as well as Glenn Perry’s recipe book stand, which makes use of offcuts, not to mention Les Thorne’s natural-edge goblet, which he made using gifted walnut.

In our techniques section, Dave Roberts meets Lynne Cavalot, whose rustic furniture-making requires little equipment but one important tool, before John Bullar delivers the penultimate article in his ‘improve your furniture making’ series, which sees him looking at using router jigs for dovetails and mortise & tenon joints in furniture making. And last but not least, Peter Bishop demonstrates a number of different techniques for preserving timber.

Moving on to our exciting features section, John Greeves talks to Mark Griffin about the making of a Gentleman’s chair before we learn more about what makes Axminster Tools & Machinery’s flagship Nuneaton store a mecca for woodworkers. In ‘Archive’, Robin Gates suggests a revolving bookstand from the March 1924 edition of The Woodworker is an elegant tribute to the enduring qualities of books, and in ‘me & my workshop’, we enter the space of retired engineer John Creevy. In ‘end-grain’, Edward Hopkins discusses the lure of the double garage, and Rick Wheaton is thrilled to receive a handwritten note from ex-President Jimmy Carter, plus a signed copy of his book.
